Olympique Lyonnais has made French football history by surpassing its historic rival, AS Saint-Étienne, in the number of top-flight victories. This milestone was achieved after OL's 3-2 win against Auxerre at Groupama Stadium, bringing the club's total to 1070 successes in the elite division. It marks the very first time Olympique Lyonnais has led Les Verts in this crucial statistic.
This 1070th victory for Olympique Lyonnais was secured across 67 Ligue 1 seasons and 2,465 matches. In comparison, AS Saint-Étienne, a club founded in 1933, has accumulated 1069 wins from 70 seasons and 2,566 fixtures. However, the regional newspaper Le Progrès notes that some statistical sites also list AS Saint-Étienne with 1070 victories.
This slight statistical discrepancy is explained by the inclusion of a 1-0 victory for AS Saint-Étienne over Toulouse during the 2000-2001 season. This match was later awarded on forfeit to TFC by the Conseil d’État and recorded as a 0-0 draw following the fake passports case.
Founded in 1950, Olympique Lyonnais, often referred to as OL, has now surpassed an older club. Last season, the two clubs traded home wins in their direct confrontations: Olympique Lyonnais secured a 1-0 victory on November 10, 2024, while AS Saint-Étienne won 2-1 on April 20, 2025.
Despite this new record, Olympique Lyonnais currently sits in fourth place on the D1/L1 all-time list. The club is behind Olympique de Marseille (1,222 wins), AS Monaco (1,114), and Girondins de Bordeaux (1,075). OL is expected to overtake Bordeaux next season, with a maximum of 1,073 victories possible this current campaign.
